Vemork heavy water plant at Rjukan, Telemark

During the drive from Drobak to Kvisla, we took a detour inland to visit the old Vermork heavy water plant, the site of an incredibly daring Norwegian- British resistance operation to sabotage Nazi production of an atomic bomb. The story was told in the 1965 film "The Heroes of Telemark" with Kirk Douglas.

We walked across the high gorge and up the other side to Vermork where there were interesting displays and a film made by National Geographic about the first failed operation, second successful one, and the sinking of a boat in the fijord carrying heavy water being moved to another site by the Germans.
